Bioenergies: research on 3rd-generation biofuels
Using microorganisms or emulating their talents in order to produce biofuels are two research orientations that look promising enough to play a part in meeting the today’s energy challenges. The CEA is a major player in the clean energies field, and is actively driving applied research into third-generation biofuels. Research teams from the CEA’s Life Sciences Division (‘DSV’) are exploring and optimizing the ability of photosynthetic microorganisms to produce hydrogen, lipids or bioethanol. The teams are also investigating a biomimetics approach using solar energy to power hydrogen production.
