Deal with the past to prepare the future. Decommissioning of the Fontenay-aux-Roses nuclear facilities.

Élise, Éole, Gascogne, Prolixe, Irène, Guyenne, Antinéa, Petrus... These are the names carried by the special-purpose platform tools – gloveboxes and shielded process lines – that had enabled CEA/Fontenay-aux-Roses researcher teams to write the opening chapter of French nuclear research history. Nuclear fuel engineering, irradiation-induced modification of materials, waste characterization and spent fuel reprocessing... These research activities were progressively phased out between 1982 and 1995 to be transferred to other CEA centres or to industry leader Areva. As the site is being reconverted to a life sciences platform, a complex project to dismantle these redundant legacy nuclear facilities and effectuate full site clean-up is currently being led, with the priority of protecting workers, the general public and the environment.
