EMMI - European Master in Molecular Imaging

Jointly developed by the CEA/INSTN and the Universities of Paris-Sud 11, Antwerp, Crete and Torino, EMMI has welcomed its first students in France, Italy and Belgium in September 2008. This high level program is promoted and financially supported by the European Commission. Its ambition is to ensure a high level teaching program from which will emerge scientists destined to work in research as well as in the industrial field.
EMMI was elaborated with the aim to encourage permanent exchange and communication between students, lecturers, organisers of the master and industry partners highly implicated in the conception and functioning of the program.

Program in France (CEA / Saclay – 20Km of Paris)
The courses are held in English and take place over a two-year period.

  • Semester 1 - Update of students' knowledge. The curriculum begins with an upgrading on the different fundamental disciplines required in molecular imaging studies (physiology, mathematics, biology, chemistry, pharmacology).
  • Semester 2 - Specialization. A course is dedicated to each of the Molecular Imaging techniques:  Optical Imaging, MRI, PET, SPECT, Ultrasound, image acquisition and treatment.
  • Semester 3 - Application. Validation of the certificate for animal experimentation. Several intensive programmes will take place at each partner institution. EMMI students are required to follow at least 2 of them (Neuro MRI / Belgium; Optical Imaging / GR; Design and validation of Imaging Probes / IT). In addition students from partners Institution will be gathered together to follow a 10 days course on "Molecular Imaging: industrial context, state of the art and multimodal imaging".
  • Semester 4 – Master thesis. Six month full time internship in one of the EMMI habilitated laboratories. It includes student's oral presentation report before a jury of experts.

Requirements
EMMI is suitable for students with a bachelor degree (at least 180 ECTS) from a recognized institution in biomedical sciences (chemistry, biology, medicine, mathematic, engineering).   Fluency in English is highly recommended. EMMI modules are also open to experienced scientists as vocational training.
