The following project currently active in the Seventh Framework programme of the European Atomic Energy Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities contributing to the creation of the European research area and to innovation (2007-2011) requires the participation of new project partners to carry out certain tasks within the project. Brief summary of task(s) requested:
To address the health risks of low doses of ionising radiation such as those that are encountered in the environment, occupationally and in the course of medical diagnostic procedures (these are described further in the High Level and Expert Group Report on Low Dose Risk (http://www.hleg.de ) and the DoReMi Transitional Research Agenda (see below Information Package) the DoReMi consortium is seeking new expertise, infrastructures and platforms for analyses related to the 4 tasks described below. DoReMi defines low doses as those of 100 mGy or less and medium doses as 0.1 Gy - 1 Gy for low LET radiations. Low and medium dose rates are defined as 0.1 Gy/h or less for low LET radiations. For high-LET radiations, dose and dose-rates of interest are lower, e.g. for alpha radiation by an order of magnitude.
Task 1: Non-targeted and systemic effects
The DoReMi consortium is seeking expertise and relevant model systems for establishing the contribution of non-targeted and systemic effects to low and medium dose radiation carcinogenesis and non-cancer diseases, identification of disease-relevant biomarkers of non-targeted effects, and exploration of inter-individual differences. A successful proposal would address one or both of the items described below.
- Development of in vivo animal model systems or higher order tissue models of non-targeted effects relevant to human disease.
- Investigating the impact of low/moderate dose radiation on the immune system and inflammatory reactions using human systems and/or relevant animal models.
Task 2: Facility for low dose rate exposure
In vivo experiments will continue to be an essential platform for the understanding of the biological consequences of radiation exposure. The DoReMi network requires an open access facility for animal exposure to enable studies at low doses (<0.1Gy) and low and medium dose rates (<0.1Gy/h). The successful proposal will be designed to deliver proof-of-principle for an exposure facility that allows the evaluation of multiple endpoints relevant for cancer and non-cancer late effects. Access conditions as well as standard operating procedures (SOPs) for monitoring animal health and hygiene status, radiological safety, dosimetry and end-point analysis are required deliverables.
Task 3: Vascular effects
The DoReMi consortium is looking for expertise on human disease and relevant experimental models that could elucidate the role of ionising radiation in vascular disease development at low doses. A successful proposal would address one or more of the needs:
- To explore the clinical nature of cardiovascular disease induced by different radiation doses. Special attention should be paid to the differences between effects resulting from exposure to low radiation dose compared to high radiation dose.
- To study if vascular disease progression is dependent on age at exposure
- To explore if there is a pro or anti-inflammatory response detectable to explain vascular disturbances observed as a result of a low dose radiation exposure.
Task 4: Novel approaches
The DoReMi consortium is looking for expertise and platforms for novel approaches that would be useful in the understanding and evaluation of health risks from exposures to low doses of radiation. Examples of areas where there is a need for new approaches are listed below but others are very welcome:
- Development and validation of biomarkers of low to medium dose exposure, sensitivity and effects usable in molecular epidemiological studies for both cancer and non-cancer end points. This should take into consideration mechanistic aspects, radiation dose, dose rate, radiation type and tissue/cell characteristics.
- Mathematical modelling of the complex cellular and tissue responses to exposures with low and medium doses of radiation with the aim to identify affected pathways and resulting cellular changes on the way to radiation-induced carcinogenesis including their dependences on dose, dose rate, radiation type and tissue/cell characteristics
- Development and use of well-defined animal and/or human cell systems for "omics" and system biology approaches to better understand low and medium dose and dose-rate ionizing radiation responses.
Expected duration of participation in project: From July 2011 to June 2014 - Dec 2015, depending on the complexity of the task.
Total Commission funding available for the tasks: The proposals addressing each Task can be submitted by an individual organisation or a small consortium consisting of 2-3 partners. A maximum of 1.2 M€ is available for the Call, with an indicative amount of 300 k€ for each task.
