NanoAthero: using guided nanoparticles to stabilize atherosclerotic plaques

With 9.8 million euros in financing, the five-year long European project “NanoAthero” will begin in February 2013, with participation from the CEA-iBiTec-S (Saclay). Its goal? To develop a treatment aimed at preventing the growth and rupture of atherosclerotic plaques, and to launch its Phase I clinical trial.

Creation of a Franco-German facility specialized in detecting bioterrorism

The CEA, the Robert Koch Institute, Bertin Technologies and the company Bruker Daltonik have signed an agreement to proceed with the development of a facility specialized in detecting biological agents that could potentially be used by terrorists.

Partnering with Singapore to study human skin stem cells

European integrated biology infrastructure set to launch

Breakthroughs in biomedical science are a step closer today, with the launch of a new distributed research infrastructure for the science of structural biology. The launch of ‘Instruct’ will give academic and commercial scientists across Europe access to a full portfolio of integrated technologies, thanks to the collaboration of fourteen of Europe’s leading structural biology research institutes.

The International PhD Program Irtelis

The International PhD Program, created by the life sciences division of the CEA is designed for students wishing to make a thesis in one of its research teams. 20 to 25 funding will be awarded during the 2012 recruitment session. Deadline for on-line application is March 11, 2012.

Two young researchers awarded “ERC Starting Grants”.

Karine Dubrana (iRCM) and Virginie van Wassenhove (i2BM) have been awarded prestigious European Research Council “Starting Grants”. This ERC grants, amounting to 1.5 million Euros apiece over a staggered five-year schedule, are only awarded to research leaders boasting the most excellent track record. Intended for up-and-coming researchers with 2 to 10 years of post-PhD experience, “ERC Starting Grants” are awarded as part of the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7). They are awarded as funding to support ambitious and innovate frontier research projects championed by a single scientific leader-investigator.
