The research teams of the life sciences division

The life sciences division currently hosts 2000 persons, including 1250 CEA staff, 500 researchers and technicians from universities and other research bodies, and some 450 temporary postgraduate and postdoctoral research workers.

They are organized in eight Institutes, housed in different research centers located near Paris (Evry, Fontenay-aux-Roses, Orsay, Saclay), in Normandy (Caen), in Rhône-Alpes (Grenoble) or in the south of France (Cadarache and Marcoule) :
  • Institute of Biomedical Imaging (I2BM)
  • Institute of Biology and Technology- Saclay (iBiTec-S)
  • Institute of Cellular and Molecular Radiation Biology (iRCM)
  • Institute of Emerging Diseases and Innovative Therapy (IMETI)
  • Genome Institute (IG)
  • Institute of Structural biology (IBS)
  • Institute of Life Sciences Research and Technologies (iRTSV)
  • Institute of Environmental Biology and Biotechnology (IBEB)

The mission of the life sciences division is to bring technological innovation to two major societal issues: health and energy. The research being conducted focuse on three main areas :

  • technology develoment to provide new tools for improving our understanding of the structure and mode of functioning of living systems;
  • basic research to dissect, both at the molecular and cellular levels, bioenergetic mechanisms, physiological processes involved in the pathogenesis and responses to stress;
  • applied research focusing on medical diagnostics and therapies, detection of environmental contamination and remediation, biofuels, energy efficient processes.

This high level of basic and applied research conducted in an international setting is periodically reviewed to evaluate relevance of objectives and quality of results.

The life sciences division also encourages partnership with industry. It is thus directly involved in three competitiveness centers, two of which are certified world competitiveness centers (Medicen and LyonBiopole).

At the European level, the life sciences division is strongly involved in Framework Programs for Research and Technological Development and coordinates several networks of excellence and integrated projects.

31 PhD projects are selected for the 2012 session of the international PhD program in Life Sciences and are detailed in the item "PhD projects for 2012". The title of each project is indicated in a table where you can find additional information such as the laboratory (or group), the Institute and the research center in which the thesis will be undertaken, as well as the names of the head of the laboratory (or group) and of the PhD supervisor. In most cases, Internet links allow to obtain more detailed information on the laboratory (or group) and its scientific activities.
